Sleeping In and Night Security

Home staff sleeping in and waking night staff are responsible for securing the premises at night in line with Fire Safety Procedures, including securing all doors, windows, etc, preventing external access. This is also to be continually monitored by waking night staff at such times when they are required by the home.

All home staff when completing shifts should be prepared to be required to sleep in unless explicitly agreed by a manager that this is not required.

Children and home staff should be aware of who will be sleeping in each night and who will be waking nights.

Sleeping in staff are expected to provide assistance to waking night safe or manage crisis situations through the night should waking night staff not be present. Should no waking night staff be present then it is the responsibility of home staff sleeping in to complete all relevant paperwork.

Home staff are expected to wear appropriate night clothing so that they are able to rise in an emergency and provide assistance promptly whilst adhering to company policies on dress codes.

Waking night staff should receive a thorough handover from Staff on shift through the day. This should include a detailed updates about each young person who is placed whether staying at the placement over night or not (e.g. those on contact visits).

Waking night staff should read all reports concerning previous shifts.

Waking night staff will be familiar with all procedures and arrangements concerning the young person's diet; health care; medication and behaviour and implement them as required.

Waking night staff will be based in a designated location in the home and all sleeping in staff and young people are to be made aware of this.

Waking night staff will monitor each young person at least once every two hours to ensure that they are settled. They will complete the waking night report after each check.

Waking night staff are responsible for monitoring home security throughout the night.

Waking Night Staff will ensure that each Young Person’s privacy is respected, as far as possible, whilst ensuring their well-being.

In the event of fire night staff, alongside the staff sleeping in should evacuate the children and call emergency services and the unit manager in accordance with the homes fire safety policy. Also see: Fire Safety Procedure.

Waking night staff should manage all crisis situations in line with relevant Policies and Procedures. Sleep in staff should only be used and/or alerted in crisis situations where to not do so would endanger the young people or staff.

Waking night staff will provide the waking night report to staff on shift the following morning and give a detailed handover of events.

Waking night staff will complete any necessary paperwork in line with company policies and procedures.

Waking night staff will be expected to contribute to unit maintenance as much as is practical due to noise, e.g. cleaning tasks.

Waking night staff are expected to contribute to plans and reports such as Placement/Personal Plans, Monthly Summary Reports, General Assessment Reports, etc.
